Italian Out of School Hours Primary Program (OSH)
The OSH program provides students with 36 weeks of quality Italian lessons and a workbook. The program is based on the NSW K-10 syllabus and has been developed by Co.As.It in conjunction with the NSW Department of Education. HSC support classes follow the Stage 6 Italian Syllabuses.
Overview
Students are exposed to a fun and educational experience that allows them to explore the wonders of all things Italian. They participate in competitions, perform in end-of-school year Italian performances and have an opportunity to win a Minister’s Award for Excellence.
Co.As.It. teachers are friendly, dedicated, experienced and approved to teach by the Department of Education - Community Languages Program.
Classes
Classes at Birchgrove are open to children currently enrolled in Kindergarten to Year 6. Weekly lessons are held for 2 hours and class sizes range from 10 students to 25 students. The program follows the school terms from February to December.
Program Overview
Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten)
By the end of Early Stage 1, students can interact in Italian with their peers and teacher through action-related talk and play-based activities. Topics include simple greetings and introductions, classroom instructions, introduction to families, food, toys, and pets, going to the park and the seaside and Italian celebrations.
Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2)
By the end of Stage 1, students can interact in Italian with their peers and teacher to exchange greetings and simple information. Topics include introducing self and others, describing extended family members, talking about the body, expressing likes and dislikes,
organising a birthday party, visiting the Zoo, describing the classroom, going to the beach and the snowfields and Italian celebrations.
Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4)
By the end of Stage 2, students interact with others in Italian to share information and participate in guided classroom activities that involve following instructions and collaborating with peers. Topics include talking about health and emotions, describing homes, expressing preferences, mealtime preparations, describing animals, talking about school and leisure activities and Italian holidays.
Stage 3 (Years 5 and 6)
By the end of Stage 3, students interact with others in Italian to exchange information and opinions. They engage in classroom activities and collaborate with peers. Topics include
talking about nationalities and different customs from around the world, describing hobbies, sports and leisure activities, having friends visit, discovering animals in their habitat, describing and recounting a holiday.

Our Premium Kindergarten to Year 5 program will give your child the edge in the Italian language. It will deepen their knowledge through the use of our digital resources and offer full immersion days, each term focusing on speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Our Premium Year 6 – Year 12 program is your child’s passport to Italy. The aim is to prepare them to sit the CILS exam, an internationally recognised certification of their knowledge of Italian. Our full immersion days throughout the terms will focus on preparation.
